BEHOLD THE MIND WARPING POWER OF TAKESHI MURATA’S “MELTER 3-D” ANIMATED SCULPTURE
Posted by admin | Art | No CommentsThe “Melter 3-D” by artist Takeshi Murata is a mind-melting animated sculpture that debuted
At Frieze New York 2014.
Shall we explain? Simply put, it is a metallic sphere that produces the illusion of perpetual liquid flow across its surface.
The sculptural animation is technically a zoetrope, and only achieves the illusion of motion with the help of a strobe light or by means of perfectly synchronized still images captured with a camera.
Melter creates the illusion of movement through specially controlled lighting, by rapidly projecting a series of pictures onto the already spinning globe.
Murata spent months configuring the design on a computer before making a physical incarnation with a master fabricator. The unique technical aspects were handled by one of Hollywood’s best special effects producers who typically work on high-profile Hollywood CGI projects, who helped Murata turn his idea into an actual lifelike, freestanding piece of art that seems to have a life of it’s own. The result is spectacular.
