Jakarta-based sculptor Ichwan Noor has created a series of five vintage 1953 Volkswagen Beetles which he has turned into a perfect spheres. The pieces were unveiled at this year’s Art Basel, which is being hosted in China for the very first time, and were exhibited with the Mondecor Jakarta gallery, fetching up to $88,000 USD. The eye-catching sculptures are part of a larger series by Noor which sees various different vehicles each undergo the same process of being turned into a large ball, although the artist also works with other subjects including the anatomical form. The new Hong Kong location of Art Basel means that over half the galleries exhibiting at the fair have originated from Asia and Asia-Pacific, pushing hundreds of previously unknown artists into the international spotlight. “Events like Hong Kong Art Basel will provide him with the needed exposure,” Jakarta-based director Monica Gunawan said. “He is quite well known in Jakarta, but not so much in the international art market.”
These are the figurative sculptures of artist Dale Dunning who welds together lead type and other hardware to create intricate masks and heads. Speaking about his work Dunning says:
The head that has been featured in my work for the last 13 years is a generic, simplified form not specific to gender, devoid of detail, resembling an egg. The head is universally recognized, easy to identify with. We live in our heads, see, feel, and experience the world in our head. It serves as the foundation upon which I can develop various paths to explore.
While you can surely enjoy the final look of these pieces, one is also drawn in by the magnatude of work that goes into the process used to create them.
Some are made up of a combination of up to 900 welded bolts and washers.
How would you even begin to start such a process. His patience and determination surely paid off.

Hyper-Realistic sculpture artist, Ron Mueck’s latest instillation is no “Big day at the beach”. Or is it?
Ron Mueck is “THE” trailblazer in the hyper-realistic sculpture world.
He has set the bar high, and opened up a previously unexplored realm in it’s scope and execution in the sculpture world. Many others would follow in his footsteps, but he was at the forefront, and still continues to blaze a trail both far and wide.

Try wrapping your head around the fact that all the sculptures below are made entirely of wood and then painted.
The artist responsible is Tom Eckert
Tom’s favored woods are basswood, linden and limewood because they carve and paint well and are stable. Coming from a background of drawing and painting his natural focus is on realism. He prefers to paint with waterborne lacquer applied with both spray guns and brushes.
